BATON ROUGE, La. -- Making her NCAA postseason debut, University of Houston freshman Leonie Harm posted a score of 69 during the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional First Round at University Club to grab a share of the first-day lead.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 295 and stood in fifth through the first 18 holes.
"We got off to a good start. We made some bogeys on the back side, but it was a good start," third-year Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said following Thursday's round. "There is still so much golf to be played, and this course is going to become harder each day."
Harm, who joined the Cougars at the semester break, drained a team-high five birdies with only two bogeys. The Gerlingen, Germany, native overcame a bogey on No. 4 to sink back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4-5.
Following her second and final bogey of the day on No. 8 and five straight pars, Harm drained three birdies over her final five holes. She started with a birdie on No. 14 to move under par for the rest of the day and, after a par on No. 15, sank consecutive birdies again on Nos. 16-17.
"This is what Leonie has been doing for the last few weeks. She is a world class player and highly ranked in the world. This is what we expect out of Leonie," Chadwell said. "It wasn't her best performance, but she got it in the hole and posted a score the team really needed coming down the stretch."
With her score, Harm set a school record for low round in NCAA Regional play. She topped the previous low of 71, set by Emily Gilbreth (Second Round) and Megan Thothong (Third Round) at the 2015 NCAA San Antonio Regional.
Harm was joined atop the individual leaderboard by Washington's Ying Luo. South Carolina teammates Katelyn Dambaugh and Marion Veysseyre, Washington's Julianne Alvarez and Kansas State's Madison Talley were tied for third at 70.
No. 13 Washington held the team lead with a score of 286. The Huskies posted the lowest single women's college team round at University Club since renovations in 2010. Arkansas fired a score of 298 at the 2011 LSU Tiger Classic.
No. 24 South Carolina stood in second at 290 with No. 20 Oregon in third at 292 and No. 5 Florida in fourth at 293. No. 10 Arizona State (296), No. 4 Duke (298), No. 37 BYU (298), No. 48 LSU (299) and No. East Carolina (301) rounded out the top-10 leaders.
Following the completion of 54 holes over three rounds at the Regional, the low six teams and the low three individuals not on those teams at each NCAA Regional site advance to the NCAA Championships on May 20-25, hosted at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
Sophomore Yuka Kajiki was tied for 25th with a 74. The Hiroshima, Japan, native drained three birdies on her front nine and was 3-under-par through 11 holes but endured a challenging final seven holes.
Senior Raegan Bremer overcame a slow start to post the Cougars' third-lowest score of the day. Bremer, who was recently named to the All-American Athletic Conference for the third straight season, endured five bogeys on her front nine but rallied with three birdies in the first five holes of her back nine to finish in a tie for 32nd with a 75.
Sophomores Emily Gilbreth and Megan Thothong were tied for 50th with 77s.
SECOND-ROUND PAIRINGS
The Cougars begins Friday's Second Round at 8:24 a.m. off No. 1. Houston will compete in threesomes with student-athletes from No. 5 Florida and No. 10 Arizona State.
Gilbreth will start Friday's play for the Cougars at 8:24 a.m., with Thothong (8:33 a.m.), Bremer (8:42 a.m.), Kajiki (8:51 a.m.) and Harm (9 a.m.) following.

NCAA REGIONALS HISTORY
This marks the second straight season in which the Cougars competed in the NCAA Regionals. Houston has competed in the NCAA postseason every season in which it was eligible for team competition after starting the program with four individuals in 2013-14.
A year ago, the Cougars played as the No. 12 seed at the NCAA San Antonio Regional, finishing 13th with a score of 881.
Bremer, Gilbreth, Kajiki and Thothong are competing in the second NCAA Regionals of their collegiate careers, while Harm made her NCAA postseason debut.
At the 2015 NCAA San Antonio Regional, Gilbreth led the team individually with a score of 218 and tied with Thothong for the team's low round of the tournament with a 71 in the Second Round.
PLAYING at the UNIVERSITY CLUB
This is the second time that Houston has competed in Baton Rouge, La., this season. The Cougars finished seventh at the LSU Tiger Classic on March 20-22 22 with Bremer and Harm earning top-20 finishes.
The Cougars are one of five teams in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional who previously played at the University Club in 2015-16. Houston joins Duke, NC State, Denver and host LSU.
In addition, Houston is one of 12 teams in the NCAA Regional field who have previous experience at their Regional site this season. In addition to Duke, NC State, Denver and LSU at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, both Texas and Texas A&M faced one another in match-play on Sept. 6, 2015, at Traditions Club in Baton Rouge, La.
Stanford, Colorado, San Jose State, USC and Pepperdine also played at the Stanford Golf Course at various times earlier this season.

The low six teams and low three individuals not on those teams from each of the four NCAA Regionals advance to the NCAA Championships on May 20-25, hosted at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
