Rain Forces Schedule Changes at Regional
5/26/2016 12:00:00 AM | Track and Field
Lawrence, Kan. -- Due to inclement weather in the Lawrence, Kan., area, the first day of the 2016 NCAA Track & Field West Regional has been postponed until Friday, May 27, and the meet schedule for the remainder of the weekend has been revised.
The Cougars were unable to begin competition on Wednesday, due to the weather, and the meet only saw the beginning of the men's hammer throw, and the women's javelin get underway. Neither of those events were able to be completed and will be resumed on Friday.
All of Thursday's events will now be held on Friday, beginning for the Cougars at 8:40 a.m., when distance runner Brian Barraza competes in the 10,000-meter run. The remainder of the running events will see their first round's cancelled and will be ran as quarterfinal only events.
The sprints begin at 9:20 a.m., with the 100-meter dash and will be followed by the 400-meter dash at 10:10 a.m. The 800-meters will now be held at 11 a.m., and will be followed by the 400-meter hurdles at 11:50 a.m. Friday's action will conclude with the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 12:45 p.m.
Houston will have competitors in the men's long jump to kick off their field events at 9 a.m., Friday morning. Mikaila Martin will throw the hammer for the women's squad at 10:30 a.m., which will conclude action for Houston in the field.
With the threat of weather looming on Saturday as well, the decision was made to change the schedule for the final day. Running action will move to 10 a.m., beginning with the women's 4x100-meter relay and will consist of the remainder of the running events concluding with the 4x400-meter relay at 2:50 p.m.
Houston will also compete in the women's triple jump at 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, while Felipe Valencia and Alex Garza will wrap field event competition at 1 p.m., in the shot put.

NATIONALLY RANKED SIGNING CLASS
The Cougars made noise throughout the entire offseason when the men's signing class was ranked as the No. 2 class in the nation by Flotrack last July. The current freshmen on campus are led by three incoming student-athletes on the MileSplit All-American team. Marcus McWilliams (110m hurdles), Gerald Mills (200m) and John Lewis III (100m) all earned All-America honors, while distance runner Jahnavi Schneider was named as the No. 3 cross country recruit in the state of Texas by TxRunning.com.
