Postseason Continues With NCAA West Regional

Lawrence, Kan. -- The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Track & Field Teams will send 19 individual athletes and four relays to the NCAA West Regional, beginning Thursday, May 26, in Lawrence, Kan. Athletes will be competing for the chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships throughout the meet.
The top-48 athletes in each individual event, as well as the top-24 relays and heptathlon/decathlon athletes in each region, qualified for their respective regionals.
Action for the Cougars begins Thursday at 3:30 p.m., with Cameron Burrell, Antwan Dickerson and Trumaine Jefferson in the men's long jump, while Mikaila Martin will throw the hammer for the women at 4 p.m. Running events kick off at 5 p.m., with Amere Lattin in the 110-meter hurdles, followed by the men's and women's 100-meter dash at 6:30 and 6:55 p.m., respectively.
Houston will enter one athlete in each of the 400, 800 and 10,000-meters throughout the remainder of the day. Mayorca Young will run the quarter mile at 7:20 p.m., while Brian Bell will run the half mile at 8:35 p.m., and Brian Barraza will compete in the longest race on the track at 9:40 p.m.
All of the running events on Thursday with the exception of the 10,000 will be first round action, with the top-24 athletes in each event qualifying for the quarterfinals Friday. The field events will see the top-12 athletes in each event automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., to be held June 8-11 at Hayward Field.
Lattin will be back on the track to open Friday's competition in the 110-meter hurdles at 5:30 p.m., All athletes qualifying for the quarterfinals in their respective events will compete from 6-8 p.m., followed by the women's and men's 200-meter dash first round. Houston will have four men and two women in the half-track race.
Saturday will see the quarterfinals of all four relay's as well as the 110 hurdles and 200 dash. A pair of Cougars will be in action in the men's shot put at 6 p.m., featuring Felipe Valencia and Alex Garza. Tonyecia Burks will close out field action on the final day of the meet when she competes in the triple jump at 6:30 p.m., Saturday.

NATIONALLY RANKED SIGNING CLASS
The Cougars made noise throughout the entire offseason when the men's signing class was ranked as the No. 2 class in the nation by Flotrack last July. The current freshmen on campus are led by three incoming student-athletes on the MileSplit All-American team. Marcus McWilliams (110m hurdles), Gerald Mills (200m) and John Lewis III (100m) all earned All-America honors, while distance runner Jahnavi Schneider was named as the No. 3 cross country recruit in the state of Texas by TxRunning.com.
