PROVIDENCE, R.I. â€" After leading Houston Baseball to a 4-1 week and earning two victories on the mound, freshman hurler Trey Cumbie was tabbed the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, announced by the league office Monday.
Cumbie earns his first career award after tallying two wins as the Cougars' starter at Rice and at Cincinnati last week. The southpaw pitched in two shutout victories for Houston and led the pitching staff with 13.2 shutout frames tossed in his two starts.
The Lufkin, Texas native struck out nine, walked just five and didn't surrender a run in those two starts to move to 4-2 on the year. He held No. 13 Rice scoreless in 8.0 shutout innings with one walk and just five hits surrendered, while countering that against Cincinnati â€" going 5.2 shutout innings â€" holding the Bearcats scoreless and to just four hits with four strikeouts.
Following his two shutout efforts, Cumbie lowered his ERA to 1.33 in 13 appearances and four starts.
Houston freshman Joe Davis was named to the Weekly Honor Roll after hitting .389 (7x18) with four RBI, one double and one home run. He has now hit safely in 12 straight games. His home run at Cincinnati was the 10th of the season â€" a team-high â€" and also named him the Houston All-Time Freshman Home Run record holder â€" surpassing Mike Musolino, who hit nine back in 1986.

Houston will face Rice on Tuesday at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas for the Silver Glove Series finale. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. The Cougars then will return home to host Tulane in the final American Athletic Conference series Thursday â€" Saturday at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
