Romero, Hernandez Named to Pitcher Watch List

LUBBOCK, Texas â€" Houston Baseball pitchers Seth Romero and Nick Hernandez were recently named to the initial watch list for the 2016 National Pitcher of the Year Award, presented by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame, announced Wednesday.
Romero and Hernandez represent Houston and the American Athletic Conference on this list, joining Evan Kruczynski (East Carolina) and Robby Howell (UCF) from teams across the league.
Romero, a starter in the Cougars' stellar weekend rotation, is named to the list following the midway point of the year, as he owns a 1.99 ERA and a 4-2 record through eight appearances and seven starts. The West Columbia, Texas native has fanned 63 hitters in 49.2 innings, while hold opponents to a .174 average.
The southpaw was recently named the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Month for March and earned National and American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors as well. He has wins over Baylor, Alabama, Grand Canyon and George Washington.
Romero threw a complete game, one-hitter with a career-high 13 strikeouts in a win over Grand Canyon one week after striking out 11 Crimson Tide hitters in just 6.0 innings of work.
Hernandez, Houston's closer, has pitched in a team-high 16 appearances and has six saves and a 1-0 record through 30.1 innings of work. The right-hander owns a 1.78 ERA and has fanned 40 hitters.
The Missouri City, Texas native had a span of four straight saves in wins over Baylor, Alabama (twice) and Lamar. Opponents are hitting .173 against him.
Romero and Hernandez have combined for 103 of Houston's 294 strikeouts.
