HOUSTON - One week after three Houston programs were honored with NCAA Public Recognition Awards, the NCAA released its annual Academic Progress Rate data for member institutions Wednesday.
Fourteen of Houston's 17 sport programs increased or equaled their previous year's APR scores, including the three aforementioned programs (Men's Cross Country, Women's Golf and Tennis) scoring perfect scores of 1,000. Houston ranked second in the American Athletic Conference with three teams achieving perfect scores.
Eleven of the 17 programs scored higher than the NCAA average in their respective sports, while four programs ranked first in The American - Men's Cross Country, Women's Golf, Softball and Tennis. Men's Golf ranked second in The American, while Women's Cross Country stood third.
Houston Women's Golf is the only program in The American to date to record a perfect score and win a conference championship following Tuesday's title in the program's second year with a full team.
Houston Volleyball had the largest single-year increase from last season's release among the nine teams that showed improvement with a 12-point increase. Houston's Baseball, Women's Basketball, Football, Soccer, Softball, Swimming & Diving and Women's Track & Field (Indoor & Outdoor) also increased their previous year's scores.
Five teams equaled their scores from the previous year, including the three programs with perfect scores as well as Men's Golf with 994 points and Women's Cross Country with 991 points.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2011-2012, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.
