Houston Football Spring Practice #8
4/1/2016 12:00:00 AM | Football
Friday afternoon in TDECU Stadium marked the first scrimmage of the 2016 spring season as Houston's offense and defense battled for a two-hour session.
The afternoon started off with the #HTownTakeover Circle Drill and the defense again continued to assert its dominance as it remained undefeated this spring with a 6-1 win. Jerard Carter, Tyus Bowser, Zach Vaughan, Nick Thurman, B.J. Singleton and Cameron Malveaux all picked up wins for the defense while Tyler McCloskey picked up the offenses's lone win.
The two-hour scrimmage did not feature kickoffs or punts with the offense and defense starting drives at different points across the field to simulate game scenarios.
Houston's offense claimed the win Friday with four touchdowns, three of which came on the ground. Greg Ward Jr. hit Isaiah Johnson for a five-yard touchdown pass on the day's first drive before Duke Catalon scored on a four-yard option pitch from Ward. Kaliq Kokuma would add on a one-yard dive before Josh Burrell became the third back to cross the goal line, running in from nine yards out.
Ward finished the day with 151 yards passing, completing 13-of-18 attempts while Kyle Postma completed 18-of-24 attempts for 243 yards.
Ward also led the way on the ground with 40 yards rushing off nine carries while Burrell ran 12 times for 35 yards. Catalon totaled 25 rushing yards on six attempts while adding four receptions for 41 yards.
Linell Bonner led all receivers with five receptions for 100 yards while Johnson finished with five receptions for 69 yards. Midyear enrollee Tery Mark also had five receptions, finishing with 45 yards.
Defensively, Alexander Myres had 11 tackles while Emeke Egbule and Cameron Doubenmier each had eight stops. Davonte Thomas had two sacks on the day while Egbule, Steven Taylor, Jordan Milburn, Rasheed Tynes, Roman Brown, Thurman and Malveaux each recorded sacks.
