Houston Softball Comeback Cut Short

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Softball team dropped a 5-3 decision to Scott St. neighbors Texas Southern on the final day of the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic.
The Cougars dropped to 9-10 on the season while TSU improved to 6-7.
Texas Southern's scoring was sparked early when the Lady Tigers plated two runs off three hits in the top of the first. The following inning, the Lady Tigers added three more runs to take a 5-0 advantage when TSU strung three hits and a Cougar fielding error together.
Houston held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the game as the Cougars worked on a comeback.
With two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the fourth, senior Megan Noel drove in two runs with a double to the center field wall. The following inning freshman Savannah Heebner knocked in another run for the Cougars on an RBI single to left field.
But that wasn't enough and the Cougars' comeback was cut short.
Starting southpaw Julana Shrum (2-3) took the loss for the Cougars. In 1.2 innings pitched, she allowed four earned runs, two walks and struck out a batter. Junior RHP Shelby Miller threw 5.1 shutout innings in relief. Miller allowed only three hits, a walk and struck out three.

Houston Softball is set to face McNeese State on Wednesday in Lake Charles, La. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. The Cougars return to Cougar Softball Stadium for a three-game series with Lipscomb next weekend.
