HOUSTON - With what has been tabbed the most important senior class in the history of the Houston Football program working out, it was no coincidence that Thursday resulted in one of the largest turnouts in Houston Pro Day history with 19 members of the program working out for representatives from 31 NFL franchises and one CFL franchise.
Demarcus Ayers, Kyle Bullard, Alex Cooper, Kenneth Farrow, Earl Foster, Nolan Frese, Melvin Holland, Lee Hightower, Ryan Jackson, William Jackson III, Tomme Mark, Adrian McDonald, Damien Parris, Logan Piper, Elandon Roberts and Trevon Stewart from the 2015 Houston Team all participated in portions of the event which began with measurements, bench press and jumps in the Elmer Redd Sports Performance Center.
The group was joined by three members from the 2014 team - Markeith Ambles, Eric Braswell and Turon Walker - in Thursday's drills which moved to TDECU Stadium for running drills.
Jackson, who attended February's NFL Combine in Indianapolis and ran 4.37 in the 40-yard dash, participated in just the three-cone drill, pro-agility drill and the 60-yard shuttle before taking part in position workouts for the teams on hand. The nation's leader in passes defended in 2015 with 23 passes broken up and five interceptions, clocked a time of 6.86 in the three-cone drill, 4.32 in the pro-agility drill and 11.49 in the 60-yard shuttle on Thursday. Jackson's 6.86 in the three-cone drill marked the fastest result of the morning in the test.
Ayers, who ran 4.72 in the 40 at the NFL Combine, lowered his time to 4.60 while clocking the quickest 60-yard shuttle of the morning at 11.35. He also ran the second-fastest three-cone drill with a time of 6.91.
Roberts impressed the scouts in attendance with 25 reps on the bench press followed by a 36-inch vertical jump and a broad jump of 10 feet. Once on John O'Quinn Field, the linebacker who led the nation in 2015 with 88 solo tackles, reeled off a time of 4.60 in the 40-yard dash followed by 4.26 in the pro-agility drill, 7.20 in the three-cone drill and 12.07 in the 60-yard shuttle.
Farrow also put impressive numbers with the day's top vertical jump at 38 inches, and a broad jump of 10-2. He too clocked a time of 4.60 in the 40-yard dash before running the day's fastest pro-agility drill in 4.14, 6.95 in the three-cone drill and 11.37 in the 60-yard shuttle.
Hightower led all comers in the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.54 and tied Ryan Jackson for the day's best broad jump at 10-5. Holland led all participants in the bench press, totaling 26 reps of 225 lbs.
With Thursday's Pro Day complete, Houston returns its attention to spring practice with the session's fifth workout set for Friday morning at 6:30 a.m.
