Romero Named National Pitcher of the Week
3/22/2016 12:00:00 AM | Baseball
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- For the second straight week, Houston Baseball earned National Pitcher of the Week honors as sophomore Seth Romero was tabbed the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week following his complete game performance that featured a career-high 13 strikeouts in a win over Grand Canyon last Saturday, the organization announced Tuesday.
Romero joins junior Andrew Lantrip as National honorees as the duo represented the Cougars on National lists in back-to-back weeks with Lantrip's honor coming from Collegiate Baseball following his 13-strikeout performance at Alabama.
The duo of Romero and Lantrip became the first Houston duo to win National Pitcher of the Week honors in consecutive weeks in program history and 2016 marks the fourth year to have National Weekly honorees in the same season.
The West Columbia, Texas native joins South Carolina's John Jones, who was tabbed the National Player of the Week.
Tabbed the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, Romero fired a one-hit bid in a complete-game, nine-inning performance to move to 3-0 on the year. In the win, he allowed just two walks and one unearned run.
The southpaw became just the eighth Cougar all-time to fire a one-hitter in 9.0 innings and was the first to accomplish that feat since Austin Pruitt tossed a one-hitter in a shutout at Texas State on Feb. 23, 2013.
The 13 strikeouts marked a career-best for the southpaw, surpassing his previous high of 11, which came a week ago at Alabama.
Romero allowed just four bases runners and kept Grand Canyon at bay, striking out at least one Lope in eight of the nine innings, while striking out the side in the first inning.
Romero lowered his ERA to 0.78 and increased his strikeout total to 32 in 23.0 innings pitched.
Romero and the Houston pitching staff rank among the nation's Top 10 in five categories, including first in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio and walks allowed per nine innings. Romero is sixth in the nation in WHIP at 0.65, seventh in the nation in hits allowed at 3.52 and 13th in the nation with a 0.78 ERA.
