PREVIEW: Softball Hosts Hilton Houston Plaza Classic

HOUSTON â€" Houston Softball wraps up the 2016 tournament season with the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic this weekend. The Cougars welcome Incarnate Word and Texas Southern for a two-day round robin.
The tournament begins Saturday with an 11 a.m. first pitch between Incarnate Word and Texas Southern. Houston plays back-to-back games starting at 1:30 p.m. vs. Incarnate Word and ending with Texas Southern at 4 p.m.
The Cougars close the tournament with another game on Sunday against Texas Southern at 12 p.m.
All Houston games will be streamed on the All Access page on UHCougars.com.

HITS ON HOUSTON |
• Houston closes the 2016 tournament season with the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic this weekend.
• The Cougars picked up two wins including another run-rule victory over Mount St. Mary's during the Diamond Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Houston's comeback rally fell short to No. 17 Arizona State, 6-5. UH also dropped two games to No. 21 Minnesota.
• Junior RHP Shelby Miller (1-0) pitched her first career shutout on Friday as the Cougars defeated Mount St. Mary's, 3-0. She gave up eight hits and struck out three. The Sweeny, Texas, native has a 0.82 ERA in five appearances and 17.0 innings.
• Senior centerfielder Katie St. Pierre has reached base in all 16 games this season, and 17 straight games dating back to last season.
SPEEDY ST. PIERRE |
• St. Pierre has five stolen bases so far this season in six attempts.
• She ranks second in school history for the most career stolen bases (50), just behind All-American Jessica Valis who had 61 from 2006-09.
• St. Pierre also ranks in the top five in school history for career walks (86) and runs scored (140).
• St. Pierre has focused on her On-Base percentage this season. She has reached base in all 16 games this season and has a .482 OB% that ranks second in school history.
TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM... OR 20 |
• After only 16 games, a pitch has hit the Cougars 21 times this season. That is good for the ninth most in school history by a Cougar team.
• Sophomore Kaylin Crumpton leads the team with six followed by teammate Courtney Klingler who has been pegged four times.
