HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar women's tennis team will end its 9-match home streak at John E. Hoff Courts by taking on Princeton at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, before hitting the road to face American Conference foe SMU on Saturday, March 19, at 1 p.m., in Dallas.
The Cougars are coming off three tough losses at home against Tulane, then No. 7 Texas Tech, 4-3, and No. 24 Kansas, 4-2. While Houston fell short in the big matchups, junior Despoina Vogasari and Rocio Martin used their chemistry to continue their eight match winning streak in doubles play.
No. 107 Vogasari would also pick up a pair of big wins in singles play defeating Ipek Birol of Tulane 6-4, 6-4 on Friday, only to follow that with a straight-set sweep of No. 100 Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech 6-4, 6-1 the following day. Vogasari's performance on the weekend earned her American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week.
The Tigers began a tour through Texas with a stop in Austin, where they lost to No. 35 Texas on Tuesday. Princeton already fell to the Longhorns earlier this season 4-2 at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic. The Tigers will move on to Houston where they will meet up with No. 46 Rice University, as well as the Cougars. Playing at the top court for Princeton is Amanda Mullawan who is 7-3 in the dual season.
SMU enters play this weekend with an 8-6 overall record, but an 8-0 mark in Dallas. With the Cougars heading to town, the Mustangs are riding a 5-match losing streak including losses to No. 13 Wichita State 4-0, and No. 23 Kansas 6-1. Hristina Dishkova will play on SMU's top court, sporting a 10-2 record in dual matches this season.
