ORLANDO -- University of Houston junior Emily Gilbreth and sophomore Megan Thothong each fired even-par 72s to stand in a tie for third on the individual leaderboard and lead the Cougars to the top of the team leaderboard following the First Round of the UCF Challenge on Sunday afternoon.
Competing on the 6,349-yard, par-72 course at Eagle Creek Golf Club, the Cougars posted a team score of 295 to stand four strokes ahead of Texas and six strokes in front of Missouri, Iowa State and Augusta.
Starting on No. 10 on Sunday, Thothong (pronounced Toe-Tong) opened her tournament with eight pars and a bogey but rallied on the final nine holes. The Dallas native drained four birdies on her back nine, including each of the last two holes to cap her day.
Gilbreth posted four birdies in her First Round with two on her front nine and two on her back nine.
Senior and two-time All-American Athletic Conference member Raegan Bremer was tied for 12th at 74 to give the Cougars three of the top-17 individual leaders. Like Thothong, Bremer rallied down the stretch with birdies on two of her final three holes.
Sophomore Maddy Rayner tied for 30th with a 77, while sophomore Yuka Kajiki was tied for 65th with an 80.
Missouri's Michelle Butler and Tulane's Emily Penttila held the first-day individual lead after recording 1-under-par 71s.
This week's tournament is the Cougars' first action since competing at The Alamo Invitational in San Antonio on Oct. 25-27, 2015, to close out the fall season.
