No. 44 Houston Hosts Arizona, Oregon in Home Opener
2/3/2016 12:00:00 AM | Tennis
Houston â€" After three weekends on the road, the No. 44 Houston Cougars tennis team will host their first home match of the season on Friday, Feb. 5 at noon against the No. 65 Arizona Wildcats. The Coogs will follow-up by taking on the No. 51 Oregon Ducks, Sunday, Feb. 7 with first serve also scheduled for noon in that contest.
Despite Arizona beginning the spring season with a 4-3 loss to Hawaii, they finished their home opener last weekend with wins against UTEP (7-0) and No. 43 Princeton (6-1). No. 64 Lauren Marker has been a large contributor to the Wildcats success so far this season, and at the No. 1 spot, Marker remains undefeated in singles this spring.
Also starting off the season with a loss, Oregon fell to No. 17 Texas Tech 4-0 in the ITA Kick-off Weekend, but have since defeated Virginia Tech 4-1 and Idaho 6-1. Oregon finds some of their strength on the doubles courts with the combo of No. 59 Shweta Sangwan and Kennan Johnson. Before making their way to Houston, the Ducks will visit Waco, Texas to take on No. 15 Baylor on Friday.
Despite a slow start to the season, the Cougars are looking to bring the heat to John E. Hoff Courts this weekend to defend their home turf. No. 34 Despoina Vogasari, who is a combined 12-6 for the year, leads Houston in singles. The Coogs are coming off a hard-fought 4-3 loss at DePaul where the match came down to a tiebreaker in the decisive final set.
