Softball Falls to Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Defensive errors plagued the Cougars as Houston Softball dropped a 7-1 decision to Mississippi State on the final day of the Bulldog Kickoff Classic on Sunday.
The Cougars move to 3-2 on the season and return to Houston for the season home opener next weekend as they host the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational.
Freshman outfielder Maya Thomas got things started for the Cougars in the top of the second an infield single, beating out the throw at first. She moved to second when Breelyn Thames was hit by a pitch and stole third to get into scoring position.
With two outs, senior centerfielder Katie St. Pierre drove in the Cougars lone run with a base hit through the right side.
Senior LHP Julana Shrum took the loss for the Cougars. In 3.0 innings pitched, she gave up three runs while striking out three. Junior RHP Shelby Miller came in relief for 3.0 innings and didn't allow an earned run.
