Cougars Drop 3-0 Decision to USF

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-0 (15-25, 18-25, 20-25) to USF on Wednesday afternoon inside Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-25 overall and 0-19 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bulls improved to 18-13 overall and 9-10 in league action.
Junior outside hitter Brianna Lynch led Houston with six kills. Sophomore setter Katie Krebs posted 17 assists. Freshman libero Katie Karbo recorded 13 digs, while freshman defensive specialist Abby Giles, making her second career start, recorded a career-high 12 digs.
USF's Alex Mendoza tallied 32 assists and 10 digs in a double-double performance. Dakota Hampton led all players with nine kills. Libero Amber Weber collected a match-high 16 digs.
The Bulls outhit Houston .248-.048, leading 40-30 in kills, 62-53 in digs and 13-5 in blocks.
USF held the Cougars to a match-low negative .045 attack percentage in taking the opening set 25-15.
In the second set, the Bulls jumped out to a 9-3 lead and never trailed en route to a 25-18 victory and 2-0 lead at intermission.
Both teams battled late into the third set. Knotted at 15-15, junior middle blocker Brianna Gardner sparked a 3-0 run with a service ace. Unfortunately, USF rallied out of a timeout and outscored Houston 10-2 the rest of the way to claim a 25-20 upset and seal the match in straight sets.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will close the 2016 season on Friday hosting UCF in a 1 p.m. first serve. The matchup will mark the final home match for two seniors â€" defensive specialist Marisa Guzman and middle blocker Hunter Wise. Fans will receive free admission to the match.
