Cougars Fall to Memphis in Five Sets

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-2 (13-25, 25-18, 25-16, 19-25, 12-15) to Memphis on Sunday afternoon inside Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-22 overall and 0-16 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Tigers improved to 13-15 overall and 5-11 in league action.
Junior setter Keandra McCardell and junior outside hitter Sarah Afflerbaugh each turned in double-double performances. McCardell registered 26 assists and 16 digs, while Afflerbaugh finished with 13 kills and 15 digs. For McCardell, the performance marked her fourth consecutive and eight overall double-double of the season, and 28th overall of her career. Afflerbaugh's double-double was her fourth of 2016 and seventh overall of her career.
Outside hitters Brianna Lynch and Faith Squier led all players with 14 kills apiece. Junior setter Katie Krebs finished with 20 assists, while freshman libero Katie Karbo dug up a match-high 17 balls.
Memphis' Faith Myers finished with 18 assists and 12 digs. Morgan Summers recorded a team-high 10 digs. Tai Bierria and Mady Ruhlman registered 14 and 13 digs, respectfully.
Houston outhit the Tigers .200-.169, holding a 59-42 advantage in kills and 66-59 lead in digs. Memphis led 12-9 in blocks.
After the Tigers took the opening set 25-13, the Cougars rallied in set two. Tied 12-12, Houston used kills from Squier and Lynch on either side of a Krebs service ace to take a 15-12 lead. The Cougars carried the momentum and stretched their 3-0 surge into a 13-6 run to take the set, 25-18, and tie the match, 1-1, at intermission.
Houston got six kills from Lynch and held the Tigers to a .079 attack percentage in taking the third set, 25-16.
In the fourth set, Memphis flipped the script holding the Cougars to a .095 efficiency to grab a 25-19 win to force a fifth and deciding set.
Tied 4-4 in the fifth set, the Tigers outpaced Houston 11-8 the rest of the way to seal the comeback.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will conclude the road portion of their 2016 schedule with visits to East Carolina on Nov. 17 and Cincinnati on Nov. 19.
