EL PASO, Texas â€" University of Houston junior Michael Perras stood in 18th following the first day of play at the Western Refining All-America Classic on Saturday evening at El Paso Country Club.
Competing on the 6,889-yard, par-71 course, Perras opened the tournament with a 74 and followed that with a 72 to finish the first day with a score of 146.
After battling through a birdie-free First Round on Saturday morning, the Deer Park, Texas, native fought through a slow start in his afternoon session. Perras bogeyed four of his first seven holes and stood at +4 through eight before turning things around.
He enjoyed his first birdie of the day on the 550-yard, par-5 ninth hole and added another birdie just two holes later. Perras drained two birdies in a three-hole stretch on No. 14 and No. 16 on the way to a 72 in the Second Round.
Oklahoma State's Kristoffer Ventura held the first-day lead at 8-under 134 to stand one stroke ahead of No. 5 Sam Burns at LSU. USC's Justin Suh finished the first day in third at 137 with UNLV's John Oda in fourth at 138.
Perras begins his Final Round at 9 a.m. (CST) Sunday off No. 10 in a twosome with Tyler McDaniel from Kentucky.
Perras earned the honor of competing in this prestigious tournament after earning PING All-America Honorable Mention honors during the 2015-16 season.
A year ago, he was named to both the PING All-Central Region and All-American Athletic Conference teams after leading the Cougars with a 71.62 average and 22 rounds of par or better.
He tied the school record with a 63 in the First Round of the HBU Husky Intercollegiate on Sept. 21, 2015, on the way to the first title of his collegiate career. Later in the season, he became the second Cougar in school history to record three straight rounds in the 60s in NCAA Regional play and captured the NCAA Franklin Regional individual championship.
Entering this weekend's action, Perras ranked second on the team with a 71.33 scoring average and seven rounds of par or better.
