HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar soccer team received the American Athletic Conference Fair Play Award, the league office announced Tuesday.
The honor is given to the team with the fewest accumulated points throughout conference play; fouls (one point), yellow cards (five points) and red cards (10 points). The Cougars earned just 73 points, with 63 fouls (63 points), 2 yellow cards (10 points) and zero red cards.
The Cougars finish the season 6-7-3 and 1-6-2 in conference play. Houston was the first team in the league to have two different goalkeepers take home Goalkeeper of the Week honors. Sophomore Rachel Estopare has earned conference laurels twice. Estopare took home the honor the second week of the season and on Oct. 17, while freshman Nicole Young earned the conference's weekly award on Sept. 19.
In total, six Cougars combined to score 20 goals. Sophomore Desiree Bowen led the squad with seven after nabbing a hat trick in Houston's match against New Mexico State. Juniors Hannah Dauzat and Selena Peters each had four goals. Dauzat's include a hat trick in the season opener against Texas Southern. Junior Vanessa Almaguer has netted three while Brook Runyon and Kristina Schulz scored one goal each.
The Cougars recorded six shutouts this season. With four shutouts in non-conference play, Houston tied the program record for most non-conference shutouts (2005 and 2010). Estopare and Young combined for 96 saves and a 1.38 goals against average.
