HOUSTON -- A finalist for the award in 2015, Houston head coach Tom Herman has been named to the watch list for the 2016 Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Award, the American Heart Association announced.
In his second year at Houston, Herman has compiled a 19-2 career record as the Cougars sit at 6-1 entering Saturday's Lone Star showdown at SMU. Currently ranked No. 11, Houston spent five weeks at No. 6 after a season-opening weekend win over No. 3 Oklahoma. Herman joined College Football Hall of Famer Bill Yeoman as the only UH coaches with a win over a top-3 opponent.

With its win over OU, Houston has a program-record five straight wins over top-25 opponents (all under Herman), a number that ranks second nationally among active streaks against ranked opponents behind only Alabama (11).
Under Herman's leadership, Houston started 5-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history with its 19 wins since the start of the 2015 falling just behind the 21 from Alabama and Clemson.
Houston is one of seven teams nationally to rank in the top 20 in both scoring offense (No. 11 - 42.7) and scoring defense (No. 20 - 19.0), joining Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Washington, Baylor and Western Michigan in accomplishing the feat.
Houston is the only team nationally in the top 10 for both offensive first downs (No. 2 - 27.9 per game) & defensive first downs (No. 6 - 14.7).
The Houston defense is imposing its will, ranking third in the nation in rushing defense (87.1 yards per game) while ranking tenth in total defense (298.7 yards per game) and 20th in scoring defense (19.0 points per game).
In December, five to 10 finalists for the Bear Bryant Award will be announced. Finalists will attend an awards banquet Jan. 11, 2017, at the Toyota Center, where the winner will be announced live. The Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award is the only college coaching honor determined after all bowl games are concluded and is voted on by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
