Cougars Drop Contested Match to ECU

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team battled with East Carolina but ultimately fell 3-0 (30-28, 28-26, 25-17) on Saturday afternoon inside Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-14 overall and 0-8 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Pirates improved to 13-5 overall and 3-5 in league action.
Junior outside hitter Brianna Lynch led all players with 13 kills. Freshman outside hitter Megan Duncan posted eight kills, while fellow outside hitters Sarah Afflerbaugh and Faith Squier each recorded seven kills.
Setters Keandra McCardell and Katie Krebs finished with 18 and 15 assists, respectfully. Freshman libero Katie Karbo recorded a match-high 14 digs, while senior middle blocker Hunter Wise tied ECU's Ashley McRae with three blocks.
Pirate setter Sabrina Gonzalez registered 46 assists and 13 digs in a double-double effort. Lael Ceriani, McRae and I'Tiana, Taylor also recorded 11 kills. Libero Brandee Markwith joined Gonzalez with 13 digs.
ECU outhit Houston .348-.261, holding a 53-44 advantage in kills and 48-44 edge in digs. Both teams recorded four blocks, respectfully.
The first two sets saw a combined 31 ties as neither team led by more than three points. The Pirates eventually edged the Cougars 30-28 and 28-26 to lead 2-0 at the break.
In the third set, ECU never trailed en route to a 25-17 victory to close the match in straight sets.
UP NEXT
The Cougars will play their final match of a three-match homestand welcoming Tulane to Athletics/Alumni Center in a 7 p.m. first serve on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
