Brian Barraza Named The American AOTW

HOUSTON - Junior distance runner Brian Barraza has been named The American Athletic Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week for his performance in the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Running in his first meet since winning the NCAA South Central Regional and advancing to the NCAA Championships during cross country, Barraza ran The American's fastest 3000-meter run this season at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational this weekend. The El Paso, Texas native posted an 8:08.15 in the final event before the relays to clock the nation's 20th best time in 2016.
The award marks the third American Conference Track Athlete of the Week honor for Barraza during his career having also claimed the honor on Feb. 18, 2014, and again on Jan. 20, 2015. The former Franklin High School standout has also been named American Cross Country Athlete of the Week three times in his career.
NATIONALLY RANKED SIGNING CLASS
The Cougars made noise throughout the entire offseason when the men's signing class was ranked as the No. 2 class in the nation by Flotrack last July. The current freshmen on campus are led by three incoming student-athletes on the MileSplit All-American team. Marcus McWilliams (110m hurdles), Gerald Mills (200m) and John Lewis III (100m) all earned All-America honors, while distance runner Jahnavi Schneider was named as the No. 3 cross country recruit in the state of Texas by TxRunning.com.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
Houston returns home to host the Houston Invitational on Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Yeoman Fieldhouse. The Houston Invitational will be the second of three meets the Cougars will hold on their home track during the indoor season.
