Providence, R.I. â€" Junior sprinter Cameron Burrell has been named The American Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week for his performance in the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational, the conference office announced Monday.
Running in just his second collegiate meet since a season-ending injury halted his 2015 campaign, Burrell ran the 60m dash in 6.55 and clocked the fastest time in the world according to the IAAF rankings. The Houston, Texas native's world best time also set a meet record in the event, and was just one one-hundredth of a second shy of his school record in the 60m.
For the former Ridge Point High School standout, the award marks the third time Burrell has been honored with the weekly award in his career. Burrell was also named American Track Athlete of the Week in his freshman season on Jan. 28, 2014, while also claiming the honor on Dec. 16, 2014 in his sophomore season.

Houston will be back in action Jan. 23-24 when they head on the road for the first time in 2016 to compete in the Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Ky. The two-day meet will be held at the Nutter Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Kentucky.
