Houston Volleyball Sweeps Jackson State

LAFAYETTE, La. â€" The University of Houston Volleyball team swept Jackson State (25-8, 25-22, 25-13) to stay undefeated in the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Cougars (4-1) will face the Ragin' Cajuns at 4 p.m. this afternoon for the tournament championship.
Houston hit .325 as a team, the best hitting percentage this season and the highest since last season when the Cougars swept Jackson State at the McNeese State tournament (.375). The Cougars also posted 11 service aces against the Tigers.
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first set with a dominating 25-8 win. UH opened with a 8-3 run with five kills and two Tiger errors, forcing Jackson State to use its first timeout of the set. Another kill by Brookah Palmer and three straight aces by Sophie Paine forced another Tiger timeout. From there the Cougars dominated the set committing only five total errors.
Houston went on to take set two and set three to complete the sweep over the Tigers for the second straight year.
Freshman Brookah Palmer led the Cougars once again with 17 kills, hitting .517. This match marked her best performance this season. She has hit double-digit kills in all five matches. Senior middle Courtney Smith followed with five kills, hitting .833 against the Tigers.
NEXT SERVE
Houston returns to the court this afternoon to face host Louisiana-Lafayette to close out the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Earl K. Long Gym. The Cougars continue their road stretch with the North Texas Invitational next weekend in Denton, Texas.
