BRADENTON, Fla. - For the second straight season, the University of Houston Men's Golf program will compete at the nation's premier collegiate event when it tees off at the NCAA Championships at The Concession Golf Club on Friday morning.
The Cougars, who stand at No. 35 in the latest Golfstat rankings, will be part of a 30-team field at the NCAA Championships. All 30 teams will complete 54 holes of stroke play, starting Friday and ending Sunday afternoon, on the 7,483-yard, par-72 course.
Following 54 holes, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will compete in one additional round of stroke play Monday to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the NCAA individual national champion.
The top eight teams after 72 holes will be placed into a match-play bracket with the winner emerging as the NCAA team national champion. Match-play teams will square off Tuesday morning with the winners advancing to the national semifinals later that afternoon.
The Championships Finals tee off early Wednesday afternoon with the NCAA team national championship on the line.
The Cougars will compete as the No. 27 seed at the 2015 NCAA Championships. Houston joins No. 1 seed Florida State, No. 2 seed Texas, No. 3 seed Arizona State, No. 4 seed Illinois, No. 5 seed Vanderbilt, No. 6 seed South Carolina, No. 7 seed LSU, No. 8 seed Oregon, No. 9 seed Texas Tech, No. 10 seed Georgia Tech, No. 11 seed Stanford, No. 12 seed Oklahoma, No. 13 seed USF, No. 14 seed UAB, No. 15 seed Charlotte, No. 16 seed Washington, No. 17 seed Auburn, No. 18 seed UCLA, No. 19 seed USC, No. 20 seed Oklahoma State, No. 21 seed Virginia, No. 22 seed SMU, No. 23 seed TCU, No. 24 seed San Diego State, No. 25 seed UNLV, No. 26 seed Georgia, No. 28 seed Clemson, No. 29 seed Florida and No. 30 seed Duke.
This marks the second straight season in which the Cougars will compete at the NCAA Championships. A year ago, Houston finished 10th in their first appearance at the tournaments since 2001. All-American James Ross tied for third with a score of 5-under-par 205 to lead the Cougars.
This will be the first time since 2000-01 that Houston has appeared in consecutive NCAA Championships.
Houston earned its place at the 2015 Championships with its fifth-place finish at the NCAA Lubbock Regional on May 14-16. The Cougars rallied late in the Final Round to tie Purdue for the fifth and final spot to advance. On the first hole of the team playoff, senior Kyle Pilgrim stuck his approach shot five feet from the pin on the par-5 18th hole and drained the birdie.
When no Purdue player was able to match Pilgrim's total, the Cougars clinched the final spot to the NCAA Championships.
Individually, junior Blair Hamilton became only the third Cougar in school history to win an NCAA Regional individual title with his score of 8-under-par 205. He shared the award with Texas Tech's Clement Sordet
Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke recently announced that Pilgrim, Hamilton, senior Roman Robledo, junior Vincent Martino and freshman Michael Perras will represent the Cougars at the NCAA Championships. It will be the fifth time this season that the Cougars have used this group of starters.
Prior to the start of the First Round, the Cougars will take part in a practice round at The Concession Golf Club on Wednesday.
FIRST ROUND on FRIDAY
The Cougars will compete in threesomes with student-athletes from UNLV and Georgia during each of the first three rounds.
For Friday's First Round, Perras will start the day at 7:10 a.m. (CDT), with Martino (7:20 a.m. CDT), Pilgrim (7:30 a.m. CDT), Robledo (7:40 a.m. CDT) and Hamilton (7:50 a.m. CDT) following.

Golf Channel will again provide exclusive coverage of the NCAA Championships this week. Fans can tune in to live coverage 3 - 6 p.m. (CDT), Monday; 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 - 6:30 p.m. (CDT), Tuesday and 2 - 6 p.m. (CDT), Wednesday.
For Saturday's Second Round, Perras will tee off No. 10 for the Cougars at 12:30 p.m. (CDT) with Martino (12:40 p.m. CDT), Pilgrim (12:50 p.m. CDT), Robledo (1 p.m. CDT) and Hamilton (1:10 p.m. CDT) following.
For Sunday's Third Round, the Cougars return to morning start and No. 10 tee. Perras starts the day at 6:50 a.m. (CDT) with Martino (7 a.m. CDT), Pilgrim (7:10 a.m. CDT), Robledo (7:20 a.m. CDT) and Hamilton (7:30 a.m. CDT) following.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
The Cougars enter the NCAA postseason at No. 35 in the latest Golfstat national rankings. Under Dismuke's leadership, the Cougars have earned nine top-5 finishes in 12 team-scoring tournaments this season, including the team championship at the Miramont Invitational on Oct. 13-14, 2014.
With his performance at the NCAA Lubbock Regional, Hamilton moved into the team lead with a 71.91 scoring average and ranks second among the Cougars with 17 rounds of par or better. He became the first player in school history to shoot three straight rounds in the 60s during an NCAA Regional.
The Burlington, Ontario, Canada, native has posted three top-5 finishes this season and earned the first individual title of his career with a score of 9-under-par 207 at the Border Olympics on March 13-14.
Robledo wraps up his impressive collegiate career at the NCAA Championships this week. The Harlingen, Texas, n native is a close second on the team with a 72.18 scoring average and tops the squad with 22 rounds of par or better, including eight in the 60s to tie Hamilton.
Robledo has tallied five top-10 showings this season and ranks among the Cougars' top-10 career leaders in tournaments titles (5), strokes (10,712), rounds played (148) and stroke average (72.38).
Both Hamilton and Robledo earned places on the All-American Athletic Conference Team announced earlier this month for their stellar play throughout the 2014-15 season.
Pilgrim has saved his best play of the season for the end. The Colleyville, Texas, native has posted three top-13 finishes in his last four tournaments, including an eighth-place showing at the American Athletic Conference Championships.
In addition to his work on the course, Pilgrim has been equally impressive in the classroom. He recently graduated from the University with a 3.91 grade-point average in accounting from the Honors College and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 At-Large First Team.
Martino has competed in 10 tournaments this season. The Southlake, Texas, native has earned a pair of top-10 finishes, including a career-best second-place showing at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate on Sept. 5-7, 204.
Perras was a regular in the Cougars' starting lineup at the beginning of the season and will compete in his 11th tournament this week. The Deer Park, Texas, native tied for third at the Miramont Invitational to help lead the Cougars to the team championship and enjoyed five top-25 showings.
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
This marks the second straight season in which the Cougars will compete at the NCAA Championships. It is the first time since 2000-01 that the program has accomplished that feat.
Robledo, Pilgrim and Robledo will compete in the second NCAA Championships of their careers this week. They will become the 62nd, 63rd and 64th players in school history to play in multiple NCAA Championships during their careers.
Perras and Hamilton will compete in their inaugural NCAA Championships this week.
This will be the Cougars' 44th appearance as a team at the NCAA Championships. During their rich history, Houston has captured 16 NCAA team national championships and seen eight players win NCAA individual national titles.
A year ago, the Cougars finished 10th with a score of 848. James Ross tied for third with a score of 5-under-par 205, thanks to a Final-Round 66, while Robledo tied for 19th at 209. Both earned various All-America honors for their play.
