WACO, Texas -- University of Houston sophomore Despoina Vogasari fell to Stanford's Caroline Doyle, 6-3, 6-4, in the First Round of the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday night at the Hurd Tennis Center. With the setback, Vogasari's exceptional sophomore campaign ends with a 30-9 singles record.
Doyle advances to the Second Round, held tomorrow in Waco. The National Championship Match is set for May 25.
Vogasari, the 77th-ranked player in the nation, fought bravely after dropping the first set, alternating the first nine games of the second stanza with the 25th-ranked sophomore. But Doyle took a 5-4 lead and was able to break Vogasari's serve, clinching a 6-4 set victory and ending the match.
Despite the loss, Vogasari's 2014-15 season was one for the ages. Along with teammate Elena Kordolaimi, who finished with 33 victories, she formed Houston's first pair of 30-win competitors since 1985-86. Her .769 winning percentage finished just a few points outside of UH's single-season top-10.
Individual accomplishments came in bunches for Vogasari this season. She won the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship in October and American Athletic Conference Player of the Year laurels in April. In between, she nabbed a pair of American Player of the Month awards, earned two American Player of the Week honors, and rose as high as No. 21 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings.
Vogasari was the seventh Cougar to compete at the NCAA Singles Championship and the first since 2002.
As a team, the Cougars finished the season with a 22-6 record, including a program-best 18-match winning streak from May 20 -- April 17, and they defeated 11 ranked opponents in team competition. Houston was ranked throughout the season in the ITA national poll, topping out at No. 28, and the received a bid to the NCAA Team Championship for the second straight season.
