Cougars Fine Tune in Last Meet Before Conference

AUSTIN - The Houston Cougar men's and women's track and field team's set 34 personal records at the Longhorn Invitational hosted by the University of Texas on Saturday, in what was the team's final tune-up before heading to the American Athletic Conference Championships later this month.
The Cougars got a big day from their sprint and distance groups earning a combined 23 personal records between the two squads. Sophomore Curtis Brown and Junior Issac Williams each set new bests in the 100m and 200m dash with Williams placing ninth in the 100m (10.49w), while Brown took seventh in the 200m (21.12). Williams mark in the 100m sits as the fifth best time in the conference, and Brown now ranks third in the 200m.
Sophomore Bria Carter also posted a top-10 finish in the 100m dash with a wind-aided 11.59 to finish ninth. Carter helped Houston turn in seven combined personal bests in the sprints.
The Cougar middle-distance squad posted four top-10 finishes on the evening. Senior Drevan Anderson-Kaapa finished the event in third place after running a 1:50.39, while fellow seniors Mark Fernando (1:51.84) and Anthony Coleman (1:52.24) finished seventh and eighth respectively. On the women's side, Jennifer Dunlap posted a personal best 2:16.39 in the 800m to finish eighth.
Freshman Diayja Walker continued her impressive outdoor season in the high jump which has seen her post the third best mark in the conference. The Arlington, Texas native matched a career best with a jump of 1.75m to finish third.
In the field for the men, sophomore Jack Thomas threw the javelin 65.01m (213-3) to finish third in the event.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars will have a week off to prepare for the American Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held May 14-17 in Storrs, Conn. The Cougar men will look to defend their title after winning the inaugural 2014 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, while the women will look to build on their fourth place finish from last season.
