TDECU Stadium Claims AIA Austin Design Award

HOUSTON - One month after claiming the Houston Business Journal's Landmark Award for the Public Assembly category, Houston's TDECU Stadium claimed top honors in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) of Austin chapter's Commercial Built category.
The 40,000-seat state-of-the-art facility was constructed on the UH campus on the former site of Robertson Stadium and was designed by Page and DLR Group. The design team studied the historical architectural character of the UH Campus with specific focus on buildings adjacent to the athletics corridor including the Science and Engineering Classroom and Research Center buildings, the Science Teaching Laboratory building and the TDECU Stadium Parking Garage to ensure the new stadium exterior captured similar features to these buildings.
All exterior facades, brick and metal, utilize material and color palettes consistent with those found in UH's design standards and many other buildings recently constructed on campus. In addition, TDECU Stadium has a unique look and character easily differentiated from the majority of other collegiate stadiums throughout the country.
The design celebrates the spirit of football by focusing on elements that enhance the game-viewing experience such as great views of the field from all seats and from most of the concourse, nicely detailed materials and a bright, festive character. Natural light filters into the concourse while still protecting fans from the elements, and assures ample air flow throughout the concourse and stadium for the comfort of spectators.
The first season in TDECU Stadium saw a record number of Houston Football season-ticket holders and an on-campus record attendance of 40,755 for the stadium's opening game on Aug. 29, 2014.
