PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- For the first time since the 2003 season, Houston Baseball swept the conference weekly honors as sophomore Andrew Lantrip was tabbed the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week and freshman Corey Julks was named the league's Player of the Week after helping the Cougars to its fifth straight series win and remain atop the conference leaderboard with three games to play.
Andrew Lantrip -- PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Lantrip's recognition is the fourth straight American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honor -- the most consecutive honors in program history - after junior Kyle Dowdy (April 20, May 4) and freshman Seth Romero (April 27) each won the award the previous three weeks.
The right-hander won his second weekly honor of the year after earning it back on Feb. 23 following a win over Alabama.
Lantrip tossed an 8.0-inning gem on Friday vs. East Carolina that saw him strike out nine Pirates and allow just one run en route to his seventh win of the year, improving to 7-3. The win kept Houston atop the conference standings.
On the season, Lantrip has struck out 86 in 90.2 innings, both ranking him among the American Athletic Conference's Top 3 in those categories.
Houston now has had six Pitchers of the Week this season. Joining Lantrip (May 11, Feb. 23) was Romero (April 27), Dowdy (May 4, April 20), and junior Patrick Weigel (March 16).
The six Pitcher of the Week honors is the most by a Houston pitching staff since the 2000 season when seven honors were awarded.
Corey Julks -- PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For the first time in his young career, Corey Julks was named the league's Player of the Week.
The left fielder led Houston with a .533 average in four games, going 8-for-15 with three runs scored. The highlight of his weekly line is the six RBI following four extra base hits, including two homeruns and two doubles.
Julks hit his only two homeruns of his freshman campaign this week, one coming in a midweek win over McNeese State and the second coming in a crucial 11-1, run-rule win on Sunday vs. East Carolina.
The Friendswood, Texas native had a multi-hit game in three of the four games this week and drove in at least one run in all four, including three RBI in the series finale win vs. the Pirates.
On the week, Julks slugged 1.067 with 16 total bases, while notching a .611 on-base percentage with three walks. Following the weekly performance, he upped his average from .267 to .296.
Julks becomes the second Cougar to be named Player of the Week this season, joining Chris Iriart, who was honored on March 23 following a series sweep at New Mexico.
Houston Baseball became the first school in the American Athletic Conference this season to sweep the weekly awards.
