HOUSTON - Sophomore distance runner Brian Barraza opened up the first day of the 33rd Annual Rice Victor Lopez Bayou Classic in a big way with a win in the 5000m run on Friday, on the campus of Rice University.
Barraza ran the 5K in 14:25.90 to win the event by a full two seconds over the second place finisher Tommy Schmitz (Houston Memorial, 14:27.90). With the first place finish, the El Paso, Texas native picked up his first win of the outdoor season.
The Cougar distance runners also picked up top-3 finishes in the men's and women's 3000m steeplechases from James Broussard and Selena Sierra. Broussard ran the race in 9:23.96 while Sierra crossed the finish line in 11:02.98.
Off the track, sophomore thrower Damon Thompson finished fourth in the hammer throw after a toss of 56.95m (186-10) in the Cougars' only field event of the day. Josh Pegram set a big personal record in the event with his eighth place throw of 50.20m (164-8).
Through just four events, the Cougar men sit in third place at the Rice Victor Lopez Bayou Classic with 22 points, while the women sit in eighth with seven points.
The remainder of the field events will be held throughout the day on Saturday, beginning with the men's shot put, women's discus and men's and women's long jump all held at 11 a.m. Saturday's running events will be broken down into an afternoon session (noon-4:20 p.m.) beginning with the men's 110m hurdles and evening session (6 p.m.-8:40 p.m.) which features the 4x100m and 4x400m relays and the finals of the remaining track events.
