INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- University of Houston sophomore Despoina Vogasari has been selected to represent the Cougars and the American Athletic Conference at the 2015 NCAA Division I Women's Singles Championship, to be held May 20-25 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas. Vogasari received an automatic bid to the event by ending the regular season as the highest-ranked singles player from The American, at No. 81 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll.
A native of Athens, Greece, Vogasari currently holds a 29-8 singles record, including an 18-5 mark in dual contests. Vogasari became the first Cougar to win the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championship in October, and she has defeated six nationally-ranked foes this year.
Vogasari has tallied separate winning streaks of seven and eight matches this season, in addition to a 6-1 record against opponents from The American. On Nov. 6, 2014, at the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York, N.Y., she defeated then-No. 15 Zoe Scandalis of USC for her first career win against a top-20 foe.
Overall, Vogasari has collected a 3-3 record against fellow Singles Championship selections in 2014-15.
While the 64 participants in the Singles Championship were revealed on Wednesday, the tournament draw will be announced at a later date.
HOUSTON'S NCAA SINGLES HISTORY |
Vogasari is the seventh singles player to represent the Cougars in NCAA Singles Championship competition, and her individual bid is the 12th in program history. She is aiming to become the third singles All-American in Houston history after Margaret Redfearn (1984) and Kathy Foxworth (1987) each achieved the honor.
Redfearn and Foxworth each advanced to the Third Round on the way to earning All-American laurels. The most recent Cougar to compete at the Singles Championship was Sarah Borwell, who made the Second Round in 2002 by defeating Victoria Stolakasova of South Alabama in her opener, 6-2, 6-1.
UP NEXT FOR THE COUGARS |
Vogasari and the 29th-ranked Cougars (22-5) will open NCAA Championship play as a team on Friday, May 8 at 12 p.m. CT against No. 34 Mississippi State in Berkeley, Calif. The winner of that match will go on to face either No. 3 Cal or Bryant the following day at 2 p.m. CT, with the final four rounds of the Team Championship to be held May 15-19 in Waco.
