Seth Romero Tabbed American Pitcher of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- For the second consecutive week, Houston Baseball has produced the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week as freshman Seth Romero was tabbed this week's honoree after helping the Cougars to a series win on the road at USF to move them into a tie for first place in the league.
Romero made two appearances in the USF series, once in relief and once as a starter -- earning both a save and win in the three-game series.
The West Columbia, Texas native came in on Saturday in a one-run game with Houston leading 9-8 in the ninth to close the door, recording one out with a strikeout to earn his fifth save of the year -- good enough for third-best in the league.
After throwing 10 pitches in Saturday's win for the save, Romero returned to the bump as Houston's Sunday starter and tossed a gem, matching his career-best in strikeouts with nine, while allowing just two runs on seven scattered hits in 6.0 innings of work without walking a hitter.
With that performance, he went on to earn his fifth win of the year, improving to 5-3 with his ERA now a 1.92 -- for fifth-best in the league.
Romero is the second straight Pitcher of the Week for the Cougars after Kyle Dowdy claimed the honor a week ago after striking out 13 en route to a win over Cincinnati.
Houston now has had four Pitchers of the Week this season. Joining Romero and Dowdy were junior Patrick Weigel (March 16) and sophomore Andrew Lantrip (Feb. 23).

Also being recognized by the American Athletic Conference league office this week was junior Kyle Survance -- being tabbed an honoree on this week's Weekly Honor Roll.
Survance led Houston at the plate and to a 3-1 week. The junior hit .444, going 8-for-18 with six runs scored and four RBI. Of his eight hits on the week, he had four for extra bases -- a double, two triples and his first homerun of the season.
He went on to slug .889 and drew two walks for an on-base percentage of .500. The Jersey Village, Texas native was also 2-for-2 in stolen bases to up his season total to 24 -- second-best in the league.
Survance set the tone in the second game of the three-game series at USF on Saturday when he belted his first homerun of the year on the first pitch of the game -- drilling it off the video board in right center to put Houston ahead 1-0 early.
He finished that game, 4-for-5 -- matching his career-high with four hits in a game -- which has happened now four times. He drove in one and scored three times, while also swiping a base.
In Sunday's series-clinching win, Survance led the team with three hits and three RBI, while scoring two runs on his second triple of the weekend and fourth of the year.
The American Athletic Conference announced Reid Love as Player of the Week from East Carolina.
Joining Survance on the Honor Roll were: Joe DeRoche-Duffin (UConn), Nolan Blackwood (Memphis), Jimmy Herget (USF) and Corey Merrill (Tulane).
