PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Leading Houston to an American Athletic Conference sweep of Cincinnati, junior Kyle Dowdy was tabbed the league's Pitcher of the Week following a complete game shutout on Saturday against the Bearcats, the league office announced Monday.
Dowdy went the distance; striking out a career-high 13 Bearcats en route to his fifth win of the season. The right-hander allowed just two hits and didn't surrender a run or walk in the victory.
The San Diego, Calif. native retired the first 12 Cincinnati hitters he faced, before allowing a leadoff double in the fifth. That runner was erased on a 9-4 double play putout. Dowdy finished with the win, facing just one over the game's minimum.
Dowdy has now struck out 10+ hitters in his last two starts and has allowed just one run in those 16.1 innings pitched, while fanned 23.
Dowdy tossed the team's first complete game shutout of the season.
Joining Dowdy in being recognized by the American Athletic Conference for his offensive performance this week was junior Jacob Campbell, who earned a spot on this week's Honor Roll.
Campbell hit .364 in the weekend's sweep of Cincinnati and drove in an impressive nine RBI on two homeruns and a double. He also scored four runs.
He hit homeruns in back-to-back games, which included his first career grand slam and a career-best six RBI in the Cougars' 13-0 rout on Saturday in Game 2. Campbell slugged 1.000 over the weekend as the team's DH.
Dowdy became the third Houston pitcher to earn American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honors as Andrew Lantrip (Feb. 23) and Patrick Weigel (March 16) have been tabbed to the list.
The league announced Chris Carrier from Memphis was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Joining Campbell on the weekly Honor Roll were: Zach Rodgers (UCF), Tristan Hammans (Cincinnati), Reid Love (ECU), and Alex Massey (Tulane).
