HOUSTON - The Houston Football program closed out the first spring practice session of the Tom Herman era Saturday afternoon with the Red & White Game in TDECU Stadium. The White team claimed a 25-11 win over their Red counterparts behind two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Greg Ward Jr. in front of 4,461 fans.
The White Team got on the board first with three points for winning the pregame circle drill held at midfield between the two teams. The drill, which has opened every full pads practice of the spring, is a 1-on-1 test of strength with the winning team taking control of a championship belt.
Holding a 3-0 lead, the White team picked up the game's first points as Ward bolted into the west end zone from 19 yards out and converted a 2-point conversion to go up 11-0.
Ward posted the day's second touchdown as he took the ball into the east end zone from three yards out. Following a Kyle Bullard extra point, the White team took a 18-0 lead into halftime.
The Red Team put its first mark on the scoreboard when running back Kenneth Farrow plunged into the end zone from one yard out and moved to within 18-8 when receiver Isaiah Johnson made an amazing catch on quarterback Adam Schulz' 2-point conversion toss.
The Red Team continued to threaten after a White Team fumble on its first play from scrimmage. However, the White Team's defense held, forcing Ty Cummings to kick a 45-yard field goal to close the margin to 18-11.
That would be as close as the Red Team would get the rest of the way. Cornerback Brandon Wilson made the move to running back for the white team for a series and closed out the day's scoring with an 11-yard score.
Ward led the White Team with 115 yards on 13-of-17 passing and added the two rushing scores, while sophomore running back Javin Webb topped the rushing attack with 69 yards. Junior receiver Chance Allen hauled in six catches for 38 yards, while sophomore receiver Linell Bonner added four receptions for 37 yards.
On the Red side, Schulz threw for 105 yards on 11-of-19 passing with sophomore receiver Steven Dunbar's five catches for 52 yards leading the way.
Defensively, junior outside linebacker Steven Taylor paced the Red Team with 6 tackles, including a 4-yard sack, while junior cornerback Darius Reed added five tackles and a 21-yard interception return. For the White Team, senior inside linebacker Luke Stice totaled four tackles, including a 5-yard sack, and sophomore inside linebacker D'Juan Hines added three tackles.
Houston returns to action this fall when it opens the Tom Herman era on Sept. 5 in TDECU Stadium vs. Tennessee Tech.
