SKILLMAN, N.J. - The University of Houston tennis team rose nine spots to No. 39 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings, the organization announced today. The Cougars are in the top-40 for the third separate time this season and have been listed among the nation's 40 best squads in six of the spring campaign's nine weeks.
Houston (15-4) went 4-0 last week, with victories over Tulane, Cincinnati, East Carolina and No. 62 Marshall by a combined score of 23-3. Freshmen Angela Lorenzo and Mina Markovic each went 4-0 in singles matches last week, while sophomore Despoina Vogasari was 3-0.
The Cougars are the highest-ranked team from the American Athletic Conference and the only league school to appear in the top-75 in all nine weeks.
Head Coach Patrick Sullivan's club has won 11 straight matches, the second-longest streak in program history and the team's longest unbeaten stretch since 1990. They are 5-0 against American opponents this season.
Individually, Vogasari is ranked No. 42 by the ITA, while senior Elena Kordolaimi checks in at No. 118. The two Cougars are the top ranked singles players from The American.
