Houston Opens With Big Day at TSU Relays

HOUSTON - The Houston Cougar men's and women's track and field teams opened the outdoor portion of their 2015 schedule by qualifying nine student-athletes to the final round of the 64th Annual TSU Relays on the campus of Texas Southern on Friday.
In the 100m dash, sophomore Bria Carter (12.06) and senior Kiersten Brewer (12.13) finished first and second respectively to qualify for the second round. For the men, sophomore Curtis Brown logged an 11.02 to finish sixth in the preliminaries and punch his ticket for Saturday's final.
Junior hurdler, and NCAA Indoor qualifier, Issac Williams picked up right where he left off by finishing third in the preliminary round of the 110m hurdles. In the women's 100m hurdles, senior Sade-Mariah Greenidge ran a third-place 14.04 and freshman Kelsey Roy finished eighth in 14.91 to earn a spot in the finals.
Houston got another 1-2 finish in the women's 400m dash when Mayorca Young (55.76) and Kelli Hardnett (55.97) each won their respective preliminary heats on Friday. The men also had a 400m qualifier in Jermaine Fyffe who ran a 49.17 to finish sixth.
The Cougars got two wins from their throwers on day one of the relays. Sophomore thrower Cameron Cornelius, the two-time American Athletic Conference Indoor Champion in the shot put, picked up where he left off in the indoor season by winning the same event with a throw of 16.73m. On the women's side, senior Justine Price threw 49.50 in the discus to claim first.
In the jumping events, the Cougars picked up top-three finishes from senior David Brown (6.94m, second) in the long jump and sophomore Sam Montgomery (3.50m, third) in the pole vault.
Day two of the 64th Annual TSU Relays is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 21 with the finals of the 200m dash. The field events kick off at 1 p.m., with the women's triple jump at TSU and the throws begin an hour later at 2 p.m., when the women's shot put will be held at Rice University.
