GULF SHORES, Ala. - Houston Softball split 1-1 on the day, picking up its first win of the 2015 season.
The Cougars (1-2) defeated former Conference USA rival Southern Miss in a 4-1 decision before dropping 6-2 to No. 3/4 Alabama (3-0) during day two of the Sand Dollar Classic hosted by The Fieldhouse.
HOUSTON 4, SOUTHERN MISS 1 - BOX SCORE
Houston started off strong as junior outfielder Katie St. Pierre singled to third base. Junior shortstop Selena Hernandez followed with a huge home run over the right field fence, pushing Houston up 2-0 in the first.
In the second, Houston rallied again scoring two runs on a hit, an error and three walks. Junior first basemen Courtney Klingler led off with a standup double to right center to set up the scoring plays.
Southern Miss would score a run in the sixth inning off three hits and an error, but couldn't make the come back.
Freshman pitcher Kayla Maxwell (1-0) clinched the win over the Golden Eagles allowing only one run on eight hits and three strikeouts.
NO. 3/4 ALABAMA 6, HOUSTON 2 - BOX SCORE
St. Pierre and Hernandez combined again to a strong start against Alabama. In the first inning, St. Pierre led off with a walk and stole second, her first stolen base of the year. Hernandez knocked an infield single to short.
With runners at first and second and one out, third baseman Shelby Miller reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing St. Pierre to third. But an overthrow by Alabama's pitcher Alexis Osorio to third base put Houston on the board first.
From there, Alabama responded with a three run rally on five consecutive hits in the second inning. The Cougars held the Crimson Tide to just three more runs the rest of the game.
Summer Groholski (0-1) takes the loss for the Cougars, allowing six runs on 11 hits.
