Houston Softball Drops Season Opener

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The University of Houston Softball team dropped 8-1 in the 2015 season opener during day one of the NCAA Sand Dollar Classic hosted by The Fieldhouse.
Houston (0-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Shortstop Selena Hernandez led off with a walk followed by a Katie St. Pierre single. Starting pitcher Shelby Miller knocked in a run on a single to right field.
But a five run second inning by FIU (1-0) pushed the Panthers up 7-1. After giving up 7 runs in 1.1 innings, junior pitcher Julana Shrum came in as relief for Miller.
Miller picked up the loss for the Cougars while FIU's Corrine Jenkins claimed the win. Reliever Shrum pitched 4.2 innings and allowed only three hits, one run with two strikeouts.
The Cougars had a few more chances to score in the game, but Houston left 10 on base, four in scoring position.
Katie St. Pierre led the Cougars with three hits and a walk. Designated hitter Tiffani McKnight went 2-for-3 with two singles.
UP NEXT
Houston Softball continues tourney play with a doubleheader tomorrow as the Cougars take on former Conference USA rival Southern Miss at 3 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. game vs. No. 3/4 Alabama.

To purchase tickets in person, fans can visit the Athletics Ticket Office located on the northeast corner of TDECU Stadium, just outside of Gate 1 off Cullen Boulevard. Parking is available in the TDECU Stadium parking garage with the first 30 minutes free of charge. Regular business hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
All UH main campus students are admitted FREE to regular-season softball home games with a valid student ID.
SINGLE-GAME TICKETS ON SALE NOW
Fans can purchase general admission single-game tickets beginning as low as $5 for youth and $8 for adults through UHCougars.com or by contacting the Houston Athletics Ticket Office at 713-GO-COOGS (462-6647).
While single-game tickets are available, fans are encouraged to save and purchase 2015 season tickets. General admission season tickets are just $75 for 28 home games ($2.68 per ticket).
