HOUSTON - The University of Houston Softball team dropped 5-4 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and 10-7 to Illinois on Day Two of the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic.

The Cougars fell to 6-10 on the season.

Junior shortstop Selena Hernandez led the Cougars as she went 5-for-7 in the two games, racking up a two doubles, a homerun and three RBIs.

TAMUCC 5, UH 4 - BOX SCORE
In game one of the day for Houston, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi jumped out to a 5-0 lead off seven hits in the third, fourth and sixth innings.

Junior outfielder Katie St. Pierre led a two-out rally late in the sixth inning as she singled to the pitcher, beating out the throw. Selena Hernandez followed with a bomb over the centerfield fence, plating two runs.

In the last effort for the Cougars, Jaime Edwards smacked a one-out double down the left field line. Sophomore transfer Jaylin Baldridge entered the game to pinch run for Edwards as relief pitcher entered and knocked a single to centerfield.

Senior catcher Kris Davila came in the clutch as she hit a single through the right side of the infield to score Baldridge. Another single by Katie St. Pierre drove in a run, making it 5-4 with two outs. But a strikeout and a flyout ended the streak for the Cougars.

St. Pierre went 3-for-4 against the Islanders, all of which were infield singles. She also tallied one run and a batted a run in.

Maxwell (2-2) took the loss for the Cougars. She pitched 3.0 innings, gave up two earned runs off five hits and walked one batter.

Houston defense turned three double plays marking a season high for the team. Cougars have totaled 16 double plays this season. Last year, the Cougar defense turned 28 double plays to break the school record.

ILLINOIS 10, UH 7 - BOX SCORE
Houston Offense tallied its second most hits of the season (12) against Illinois. The Cougars scored in five of the seven innings, but stranded eight runners on base.

Cougars trailed 8-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning before junior designated player Courtney Klingler roped her fourth home run of the season. Houston shortened the lead 8-5 after another hit and an error by Illinois.

In Houston's final chance of the night, Shrum knocked a solo home run over the scoreboard to cut Illinois' lead 10-7. The Cougars came up short in the end, stranding eight runners on base.

Shrum (2-4) took the loss for the Cougars. She allowed six earned runs and struck out one.

Houston Softball returns for Day Three of the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic as the Cougars host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Cougars also host Illinois on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. for the final day of the Classic.
