Houston Softball Wins Home Opener vs. UNI

HOUSTON - The University of Houston Softball team grabbed its first win at home for the 2015 season with a 5-2 victory over Northern Iowa during day one of the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational.
The Cougars move to 4-5 on the year after they split the day 1-1 after dropping a 3-1 decision to 2014 Southland Conference champs McNeese State.
Houston has now turned eight double plays this season. Last year, The Cougars broke the school record for the most double plays turned in a season with 28 total.
HOUSTON 5, UNI 2 - BOX SCORE
After giving up a run off two hits in the second inning, Houston rallied to take a 3-1 lead over UNI in the Cougars' home opener Friday afternoon. With two outs and a runner on first, Katie St. Pierre singled, advancing Kaylin Crumpton to second. Selena Hernandez crushed an RBI single up the middle, scoring Crumpton. Another single by Kayla Holland brought in two runs to push the Cougars' lead to 3-1.
In the fourth inning, Houston stretched its lead with a two RBI single by Crumpton.
St. Pierre and McKnight went 2-for-3, each scoring a run.
Starting pitcher Kayla Maxwell (2-0) took the win for the Cougars. She pitched 6.0 innings, allowed only two runs on seven hits and three stikeouts.
MCNEESE 3, UH 1 - BOX SCORE
A leadoff triple by St. Pierre kick started the Cougars' rally in the first inning. Hernandez followed suit with an RBI double to deep left center.
Freshman De'Zha Scott entered the game to pinch-hit for catcher Megan Noel during the sixth inning, hitting her first collegiate hit.
Julana Shrum (1-2) took the loss for the Cougars. McNeese State's Emily Vincent (3-0) picked up the win for the Cowgirls.
UP NEXT
Houston Softball returns to Cougar Softball Stadium for Day Two of the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational tomorrow. Cougars are set to face UMass at 2 p.m. and DePaul at 4:30 p.m.

To purchase tickets in person, fans can visit the Athletics Ticket Office located on the northeast corner of TDECU Stadium, just outside of Gate 1 off Cullen Boulevard. Parking is available in the TDECU Stadium parking garage with the first 30 minutes free of charge. Regular business hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
All UH main campus students are admitted FREE to regular-season softball home games with a valid student ID.
SINGLE-GAME TICKETS ON SALE NOW
Fans can purchase general admission single-game tickets beginning as low as $5 for youth and $8 for adults through UHCougars.com or by contacting the Houston Athletics Ticket Office at 713-GO-COOGS (462-6647).
While single-game tickets are available, fans are encouraged to save and purchase 2015 season tickets. General admission season tickets are just $75 for 28 home games ($2.68 per ticket).
