PROVIDENCE, R.I. â€"Houston Cougar Women's Basketball freshman Serithia Hawkins has been named the the American Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The weekly honor is the first major award of the freshman's career after she was named to the Weekly Honor Roll last week.
Hawkins averaged 9.5 points per game last week while shooting 45.0 percent from the field. She also averaged 7.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per contest as the Cougars went 1-1 on the week.
"I'm proud of Serithia and how she continues to progress as a freshman," Head Coach Ronald Hughey said. "She continues to work hard and has an incredibly high ceiling. For her to be recognized by the conference in back-to-back weeks shows how bright her future is."
The rookie from Moore, Okla., had her best performance as a collegian Dec. 20 in a 55-45 loss to UTRGV. Hawkins tallied a career-high 13 points while also grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds en route to her first career double-double.
For the season, Hawkins leads all American Athletic Conference freshman in both scoring, with 10.5 points per game and rebounding, with 6.9 boards per game, and is 10th among all American Conference athletes with that mark.
