PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. â€" University of Houston Tennis junior Despoina Vogasari went 1-1 Tuesday at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, held at the Riviera Tennis Club. Vogasari, listed No. 42 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason singles rankings, won her afternoon match before dropping a hard-fought three-set battle in the evening.
Vogasari started her day against No. 63 Clementina Riobueno from Miami (Fla.) in the First Round of Qualifying. The 2015 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year seized control of the match early and never relented, earning a 6-4, 6-1 win.
The victory over Riobueno gave Vogasari 11 career victories over nationally ranked opponents. It was also her third career win at Riviera after collecting a pair of victories last season.
In the evening, Vogasari faced off with Ohio State's Francesca Di Lorenzo. Vogasari dropped the opening set, 6-4, and looked to be in trouble as she went down a break early in the 2nd set. But the Cougar responded, battling back to force a 3rd set with a 6-4 win of her own.
Unfortunately, Vogasari could not outlast Di Lorenzo in the final set. The Ohio State player won the frame to secure the victory, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. With the setback, Vogasari was eliminated from the tournament.
The loss was Vogasari's first of the season, dropping the Athens, Greece, native to 4-1 in 2015-16.
