Adrian McDonald Named Thorpe Award Semifinalist

HOUSTON - Two days after tying Houston's career interception record, safety Adrian McDonald was named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually to the nation's top defensive back, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Jim Thorpe Association announced Monday.
McDonald represents the lone state of Texas selection on the list of semifinalists and is the only defensive back from The American Athletic Conference on the list.
Three Thorpe Award finalists will be named on Monday, Nov. 23, and the winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 10.

The Lawton, Okla., native picked off his third pass of the season and the 16th of his career Saturday to tie a 27-year old record set by Johnny Jackson from 1986-88. He ranks fourth among all active players nationally with his 16 career interceptions.
The senior enters this weekend riding 35 consecutive starts in the Houston backfield and leads The American with five turnovers on the year â€" three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
He's third on the Houston team with 45 tackles, including one for loss. McDonald also has one forced fumble, one pass break up and two quarterback hurries. He led The American with eight turnovers, five interceptions and three fumble recoveries in 2014 while leading the league with six interceptions in 2013.
McDonald and No. 18/19 Houston take on the SEC's Vanderbilt at 6 p.m., Saturday, at TDECU Stadium. The game will air on ESPN2 and KPRC 950 AM with the radio pregame show hosted by Matt Thomas kicking off at 4:30 p.m.
