Houston Drops Saturday Contest at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Houston women's basketball team fell to Memphis, 84-49, on Saturday at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The setback drops the Cougars to 6-13 (1-7 American Athletic Conference).
Memphis built a 16-point lead in the game's first seven minutes, taking advantage of early turnover issues by the Cougars. Houston was unable to draw even after falling into the early hole.

Memphis hit seven straight field goals early in the first half and opened the game on an 18-2 run. Though Houston rallied to cut the deficit down to six points, at 21-15, on a Mariah Mitchell free throw with 8:05 left in the first half, the Tigers never relinquished the lead.
TOP PERFORMERS |
Houston: Mitchell paced the Cougars and finished one point shy of a career high by scoring 14. Bianca Winslow grabbed five steals, a personal best.
Memphis: Ariel Hearn led all players with 21 points and seven assists.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE |
- Memphis shot 58.6 percent (34-for-58) for the game, including a first half mark of 62.1 percent (18-for-29).
- The Cougars shot 26.2 percent (16-for-61) overall.
- Marche' Amerson added nine Houston points, and Moesha Kinard came off the bench to score eight.
- Alecia Smith led Houston with three assists.
- Memphis led at halftime, 47-23. Mitchell and Terran Alford scored seven points each to pace Houston at the break.
NEWS & NOTES |
- Tyler Gilbert finished with one rejection and has now blocked a shot in 18 of Houston's 19 outings.
- Alford played for the first time in five games after recovering from an injury and had a nice effort, with seven points and four rebounds off the bench.
- Kinard was 2-for-2 from 3-point range, her first multi-trey performance.
- Gilbert is now just 14 blocks short of matching Rosheda Hopkins (1994-96) for ninth on Houston's career blocks list.
- Memphis is 15-13 all-time against Houston after Saturday's result.

Houston is back at home on Tuesday night to face Tulane. It's "Los Coogs Night" at Hofheinz Pavilion, and the game is scheduled for 7 pm.
