Making a Racquet - Vol. 3

Jan. 20, 2015
It was a tough day at the office for the Cougars as we lost a hard fought battle against the other Cougars, from BYU.
It was a difficult start for us as we lost the doubles on courts 1 and 2, leaving us trailing 1-0 before going into the singles.
Elena was quick to finish with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win, levelling the score to 1-1, followed by a win from Debbie making it 2-1. However, it wasn't long before BYU clawed back to win matches on courts 5 and 6 and then clinching the match on court 4 after Mina lost a heart-breaking match point which could have gone one way or the other, literally!
After winning four out of six 4-3 matches last year, we know they can simply go either way, just like a net-cord. Last season we had our fair share of narrow escapes, as well as our fair share of heart-breaking 4-3 losses. But it is how you react to these losses that makes you a stronger team.
We will bounce back from this loss, take the positives and learn from our mistakes. Our team goals don't change in the slightest, and it is still early in the season with a long way to go.
As all good athletes, we benefit from short-term memory loss; forgetting the losses and looking positively forward to the next win. The Cougars will now head to College Station with a clear mind, and an even more determined one, as we take on TCU at 9 a.m. Saturday.

(Editor's Note: "Making a Racquet" is written by senior women's tennis player Charlotte Phillips, who is interning with the Houston Athletics Communications department this semester. Throughout the season, Charlotte will provide a behind-the-scenes look into the Cougar tennis program, including practice stories, match recaps, interesting anecdotes and notes from the road. Today's entry looks back on Houston's loss to BYU on Monday.)
