HOUSTON - Freshman sprinter/jumper Trumaine Jefferson jumped the second best mark in the NCAA in the long jump, and the Houston Cougar track and field teams set 29 personal records at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational, at the Yeoman Fieldhouse, on Friday.
Jefferson needed just one jump to set a new personal best when he leaped 7.62m (25'0") to place him behind Jordan Latimer from Akron for the best jump in the nation. Jefferson set the mark with his first jump as a collegiate student-athlete.
Houston used the meet to recover from a tremendous performance at the Houston Indoor Opener and to get some fresh legs on the track. The entire distance team competed for the first time this season including 2015 NCAA Cross Country Championship qualifier Brian Barraza. The sophomore beat his previous personal record and won the mile with a time of 4:09.03.
Freshman Ebony White was impressive in her first mile on the indoor track. The Chesapeake, Va. Native cruised to a first place finish with a run of 5:10.02. Jennifer Blair (3.45m) also earned a victory in the pole vault while Kiersten Brewer (25.17) won the 200m dash. Houston also picked up a huge mark in the men's shot when freshman Felipe Valencia threw 18.05m to finish second in his collegiate debut. Valencia now ranks No. 14 in the NCAA in the shot.
Senior jumper John Horton continued an impressive 2015 with another win in the men's long jump. The Copperas Cove, Texas native hopped 15.02m to take the event. Houston finished the afternoon with five individual championships and 19 top-3 finishes.
