(Editor's Note: "Making a Racquet" is written by senior women's tennis player Charlotte Phillips, who is interning with the Houston Athletics Communications department this semester. Throughout the season, Charlotte will provide a behind-the-scenes look into the Cougar tennis program, including practice stories, match recaps, interesting anecdotes and notes from the road. Today's entry is the first of what will be an exciting journey along with the Cougars in 2015.)
VOLUME I - JAN. 14, 2015
READY FOR ACTION! |
After four weeks back home for Christmas break, the Cougar tennis team is finally reunited and ready to make some noise in the first match of the spring season. Our spring campaign will start at midday on Saturday, Jan. 17 against UTSA, shortly followed by taking on BYU at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 19.
Following our Christmas breaks spent at home with family and friends, we are now back in town and eager to start practice and workouts all together, ready to take on the Roadrunners from San Antonio.
Despite the unusually cold temperatures in Houston right now, we are ready to take the court for the first time. Most of us are used to the cold weather after we had snow cover the ground in our home countries over Christmas. The snow reached myself in England, and even got as far as Greece for Elena and Depi. Although luckily for Maria, she was enjoying her Christmas in the sun on the beach in Venezuela!
We are all really excited to see what's in store for our spring season, especially after such a successful fall for us all, landing us a No. 37 ranking as we enter the season. All of the hard work we have put in the last few months will finally be put into action, from the early morning workouts with our Sports Performance staff to the painful ice baths we had to endure (if Depi's screaming wasn't painful enough!)
We are now fitter and stronger and more determined than ever before to make it a record-breaking season and one to remember.
We hope to see you there to cheer us on!
Charlotte
