SKILLMAN, NJ--- Sophomore Despoina Vogasari and senior Elena Kordolaimi have each been selected to participate in the 2014 Riviera/ ITA Women's All-American Championships in Palisades, Calif., as announced by the ITA on Monday.
The two selections mark the first time Houston has ever sported simultaneous singles contestants within the prestigious event, but this will be the second consecutive season the Cougars have sent two individuals to the event in general, as Vogasari and junior teammate Maria Cardenas competed as a doubles tandem a year ago.
For Vogasari, this will mark her second straight season competing in the singles portion of the event, while she has also been slotted as the 68th best player in the nation, according to the newly released ITA preseason individual poll. The ranking is the highest any Cougar has been placed since Sarah Borwell finished the 2002 campaign ranked No. 24 in the country.
The All-American Championship dates back to 1983 and the Riviera Tennis Club has played host to the event since 1988. It is the premier fall tournament in college tennis and features the top 128 players at the NCAA Division I level, as voted by the coaches. This year's event will begin on Saturday, September 27 with prequalifying singles and doubles matches, which will be hosted by UCLA. Main draw action will begin on Oct. 2-5th.
Houston will officially begin the 2014 fall campaign this Friday at the CCLR Collegiate Invitational in Little Rock, Arkansas. The event will mark the first of seven preseason tournaments for the Cougars, before they kick off the spring season next January.
