HOUSTON - The Houston women's soccer team will head east for two games this weekend when they face the University of Georgia on Friday Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. in Athens, Ga., before heading south to face Mercer on Sunday Sept. 7, at noon in Macon, Ga.
The Cougars (1-0-1) will make the trip east in the midst of a 12-day stretch of not competing in any games. After Houston defeated McNeese State 2-0 in Lake Charles on Aug. 24, Houston has had a rainout of their North Texas game scheduled for Aug. 29 and a bye week the following Sunday.
In the match against McNeese State, senior Kayla Walker scored a pair of goals and junior Lexa Green picked up an assist in the Cougars' second shutout of the season. Junior goalkeeper Jordan Brown earned each of the team's clean sheets while playing all 200 minutes of action for Houston this season.
ABOUT GEORGIA
The Bulldogs (2-1-1) host a pair of American Athletic Conference foes this weekend when they welcome Houston and UCF (Sept. 7) to Athens. The two squads met for just the second time last year when Georgia defeated the Cougars 2-0 at Carl Lewis Field. The Bulldogs own the series all-time record at 2-0. Friday's game will be broadcast on SEC Network+ and online at WatchEspn.com
Georgia is led by sophomore midfielder Gabby Seiler. Seiler has scored four of the Bulldogs' nine goals to go along with two assists and a .333 shot percentage (4-12). Louise Hogrell has seen every second of action for head coach Steve Holeman (fifth season) in goal. Hogrell has compiled 13 saves on 18 shots on goal and has a 1.17 goals against average.
ABOUT MERCER
Houston and Mercer (2-2-0) will meet for the first time in either programs' history Sunday when the two teams face off in Macon (about an hour and a half southeast of Atlanta by car). The Bears will enter the weekend with their match against Georgia Southern on Sept. 5, riding a two game winning streak. After dropping a pair of 1-0 decisions on the road at Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky to open the season, Mercer bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Gardner-Webb and a 7-0 shutout over Alabama A&M.
Eight different Bears have found the back of the net this season with junior Sydney Brogden leading the squad with two goals. Defensive senior Tess Patton has assisted on four of the team's nine goals and leads Mercer with six points. Junior goalkeeper Maggie Cropp has seen the majority of the action for Mercer in goal and has compiled a 2-1 record. Cropp has saved 10 shots on 12 chances and owns a 0.67 goals against average this season.
