Houston - With back-to-back strong showings to begin the Rice Invitational, the Cougars looked to finish the tournament on a positive note.
Completing their doubles play in the Invitational with a match against Rice's Stephanie Nguyen and Lindsey Hodge, Maria Cardenas and Angela Lorenzo put forth a valiant effort, taking the Rice duo to a tiebreak, with Nguyen/Hodge taking the victory, 8-7.
Cardenas challenged for the championship of the Blue draw, looking to replicate the success of Charlotte Phillips and Angela Lorenzo from yesterday's Gray draw action. The Venezuelan almost pulled off a three-peat for the Cougars, battling back from being a set down and in a 6-0 deficit in the third set, narrowly losing to Stephanie Durkin, 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.
Lorenzo and Phillips played in a pair of exhibition matches against Rice, after being crowned co-champions yesterday. Lorenzo would continue her stellar play, taking down Solo Zinko, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8. Charlotte Phillips kept her hot streak against Rice this season aflame, as she defeated Stephanie Nguyen by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
With their respective wins on Sunday, Lorenzo and Phillips completed a 8-0 sweep of all competition over the course of the Invitational.
Match Notes:
- The Cougars went a combined 13-3 on the weekend
- With her championship on Saturday, Angela Lorenzo became the first Cougar in the modern era to win consecutive tournaments in her first two collegiate appearances
- Lorenzo also earned the honor of winning the final match at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium, as Rice will open a new home in October
